Riding from UH Manoa, down through Waikiki, around Diamond Head, through the back of Kahala to Kahala Beach Park for a nice BBQ. It was a pretty chill ride, I was a little disappointed we weren’t able to ride through the Waikiki strip since there was a Toys For Tots biker cruise and entire strip was coned off and rerouted to the backroads of Waikiki. Kahala Beach was very nice, overlooking Koko Head and Hanauma Bay in the distance. No bums, some tourists, and the entire pavilion to ourselves. Some of us did a small ride to grab food at Kahala Mall. I never realized Whole Foods made fresh poke bowls; I ended up buying two because it looked so good (I forgot to take a picture of it from being so hungry staring at it).
After some food, a couple of us grew a bit restless from being deprived of a distance ride, so we rode out to Koko Marina. Once we got there, I had the genius idea of riding all the way out to Sandy Beach via the Hanauma Bay hill and windy roads to Sandys and then back around Koko Head to climb on bomb Heartbreak Hill on the way back. Two people got flat tires along the way which delayed things, but we were able to get back up and running pretty quick. Climbing those hills always suck, but the payoff is a nice downhill sprint at the end. On the way down Heartbreak hill, there happened to be one of those speed limit radar trackers; I managed to hit 33mph after letting off, not realizing the meter was there until after.. I wish I could’ve pushed harder, I was really curious to know how fast I could go on my single gear. The days are getting real short now that it’s Winter season, by the time we got back to Kahala Beach at 6:30 is was pretty much pitch black. Another fun Sunday to add to the books; I can’t wait to see what next weekend has in store.
*UPDATE: just finished editing the video footage I took during the ride. Enjoy~
